About Australia

Australia's small population relative to its large area, together with labour shortages, has made the country one of the target destinations for immigration. In addition, the economic security of the country and its high quality of life are other reasons for immigrating there. Today, the country's Indigenous people make up a small part of its population. There is no official language in the country, but the national language is Australian English.

Australia's climate is varied, and each of its states differs from the others. The central part of the country consists mostly of low-lying, flat land that is uninhabited. The Australian plateau lies in the west, and high mountain ranges lie in the east. Australia's climate, influenced by hot air and the subtropical high-pressure belt, means that the seasons are not uniform across all parts of the country. For this reason, temperatures differ in the north, west and north-east. Australia's annual rainfall is much lower than the world average. In recent years the country's climate has undergone unpleasant changes due to global warming, one result of which has been devastating bushfires.

In 2020, Australia's public health system scored 83.5 points out of 100. All major cities and their surrounding areas are equipped with hospitals. Most taxpayers pay 2% of their taxable income as a healthcare levy. People with high incomes are better off taking out private insurance, because with a high income and no private insurance they are required to pay a surcharge on the healthcare levy. If income is below a certain threshold, the person is not required to pay the levy. There are many venomous animals in Australia and the chance of people being bitten is high in most areas; as a result, there is always, at very short distances, a first-aid tent or room with antivenoms ready for injection.

Education in Australia is compulsory until the age of fifteen (Year 10). The education system is divided into two groups, private and public. Australian universities operate independently and issue their own degrees. In 1988, a number of universities and colleges merged and formed the Unified National System of universities, which comprised 39 universities. Australia's public education system scored 91.0 points out of 100 in 2020. Some of the country's universities include the University of Melbourne, The University of Queensland, Monash University Clayton Campus and The University of Sydney.
