About Austria

Austria has a transitional Central European climate, meaning warm summers, cold winters and adequate rainfall. In addition, there are two distinct climate zones in Austria: the east has a Pannonian climate (relatively warm to very hot summers, relatively low precipitation and cold winters), while the central Alpine region has the distinctive features of an Alpine climate (more rainfall in summer compared with the east and long winters with heavy snowfall).

Health insurance in Austria covers almost everyone who works for a salary, most self-employed people, people claiming unemployment benefits, and pensioners. Patients themselves must pay for some services (such as treatment by private doctors, hospital stays, and dental treatments such as orthodontics). However, part of the costs is reimbursed by their health insurance fund. In the case of hospitalisation, a fixed amount per day of hospital stay is payable through insurance. Overall, the country's public health system has scored 74.9 out of 100.

Austria's education system is very similar to Germany's. Like that of many countries in the world, its education system includes public and private institutions. The country offers a wide range of fields of study in technical subjects, the humanities, the arts and other disciplines. Technical universities offer practical training that facilitates direct access to a profession. The country does not allow entry to an applicant, even one who has fully completed 12 years of schooling, without an offer of admission from one of its universities. You should remember that all universities in the country teach only in German. There are around 18 universities and 110 educational centres in Austria, and the country's best university in world rankings is the University of Vienna.

In 2020, an average of 2.137 million people with a migration background lived in Austria, accounting for 24.4% of the total population. Most people who choose this country for immigration are artists or writers; the reason is that Austria has a rich and pioneering culture in classical music and is the cradle of this type of music, and subsequently other art-related fields have also flourished in the country. It should be borne in mind that the country is considered one of those with a high cost of living, and it has scored only 1.9 out of 100 for affordability.

Learn more about Austria!

Austria is a prosperous, high-income parliamentary democracy that hosts several key international organisations. The small size of present-day Austria belies its past as a European power that endured for centuries under the rule of the Habsburg dynasty. That era ended with the defeat of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the First World War. Austria then established itself as a republic, a period that ended in 1938 with the era of Nazi Germany. After Germany's defeat in the Second World War, Austria eventually re-established itself as an independent republic and committed to maintaining its neutrality on the world stage during the Cold War. The country has a rich tradition as a cultural centre of the continent. Vienna, the country's capital, became the centre of innovation in European classical music. Famous composers such as Schubert and Johann Strauss were born in Vienna, and Ludwig van Beethoven and Mozart spent most of their lives in the city.

Austria consists of 9 federal states, one of which is Vienna, the capital and largest city of Austria.

The official language of Austria is Austrian German. Alongside German, minorities speak Croatian, Slovene and Hungarian. People here are very attached to the German language, and without an adequate level of German, both your chances of being admitted to the country and your acceptance by and communication with the people will be greatly reduced. So make learning Austrian German one of your top priorities.

The culture of the Austrian people is very rich. Most of them are very sociable and kind. Most people attach particular importance to the way they dress, and they consider dressing untidily or arriving late for an appointment to be unacceptable.

In 2020, Austria ranked eleventh in the world for quality of life. Overall, Austria ranked 21st among the best countries in the world.

Austria and its people generally have a calm outlook on life and on other people.

Austria has one of the highest standards of living among the world's economies and ranks highly in terms of GDP per capita. The country's economy is closely linked to Germany, its main trading partner. Austria's leading economic sectors are services, industry and agriculture. Austria is a major tourist destination, largely because of the Alps in the west and south.

In 2022, rent in Austria is about 54.83% higher than in Iran. The cost of living is about 59.46% higher than in Iran. The price per square metre of a home in the city centre is about 4.960.40 euros, and outside the city centre about 3.779.70 euros.

Monthly utilities, including basic services (electricity, heating, cooling, water, garbage) for an 85-square-metre home, cost about 217.36 euros.
